Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

Jul 10th 20

“The Self-Generation Incentive Program will offer incentives to energy storage systems based on several factors, including the kilowatt-hour (kWh) capacity of the system. The incentive amount offered to new storage customers will decline over time as the market matures to ensure efficient use of these ratepayer-funded incentives.” - California Public Utilities Commision

The Self-Generation Incentive Program is one of the longest running programs in the country. It began as a response to the energy crisis in California in 2001. It is a rebate incentive program that is only available in that state of California. In 2001, SGIP focused on smaller projects which then grew due to the impact it had. Since 2016, SGIP has funded just over thousands of projects.

The processes to receiving your SGIP takes about six to nine months. Our representatives will walk you through the process of receiving your SGIP check. There are a multitude of different steps, and the amount you receive will solely be based on your system.

The first step is that the customer will be sent a Reservation Request Form to sign, which outlines the details of the project for which the rebate is being requested. After receiving the signed Reservation Request Form, the Reservation Request Package will be submitted to the respective utility. Because this is a state program, it is possible that funds can run out. If that is necessary, then the customer will be put on a waitlist. As other projects cancel, or as funds are reallocated from other sectors, the project will move up the wait list until it is selected for review. If funds are still available, the application will be selected for review 24 hours after it was submitted. The customer will receive a notification once the application is put in review.

Once the application is selected for review, the initial review process takes an average time of about 8-12 weeks to complete. When the initial review process is completed, the application will receive a “Confirmed Reservation Letter”, meaning the rebate has been set aside for the project. Once the project has received both the Confirmed Reservation Letter and Permission to Operate the installed system/battery, the customer will be sent Incentive Claim Form documents to sign. The review of these documents takes an average time of about 8-12 weeks to complete. When the Incentive Claim Package is approved, the rebate payment will be processed. The check will be mailed to the customer within 4-8 weeks of overall rebate approval.

Since the SGIP rebate is a state funded program that is paid out by your utility company, it should be viewed as a bonus and cannot be guaranteed to every customer.
